Local email collection or forwarding?
In years gone by, we used to encourage customers to forward their email to the one place they collect email – that might be their Yahoo! or GMail account. We no longer encourage forwarding – and here is why.
The reason we don’t recommend forwarding are four-fold:
- Once we try to forward an email instead of collect it in a mailbox for collection from our servers, we have no control if it goes into the mailbox, or is filtered, so an email we consider good, can be considered junk – you might get it – or it might be junk filtered.
- We cannot force another server to TAKE the email; – ie, if we try to forward the email, they may “refuse delivery” – and when that happens, our mail server just tries to send it back to the source as “non-deliverable” – basically you don’t get it – we send it back.
- Junk email that we would deliver, but cannot return, builds up in the mail delivery system as “I’ll try and send it back later” – with no hope of actually returning it. We clear about 100 of these out of the system every hours – mainly Gmail, but some other forwarding mail places where they refuse to accept the email. I have no idea how many are legitimate – we just throw them away.
- Customers with easy to guess emails – like info – webmaster, any “firstname@” – will get a ton of junk email – and when we try to deliver that to the final destination, they keep track of the ratio of the good to bad email – with easy to guess emails, that ratio gets “unattractive” – i.e., the junk may outnumber the good emails 10 to 1. When the ratio gets HIGH – those mail providers, like Gmail + GoDaddy – can put us on a “delay” – ie, they can start putting ALL email from our servers on delay – that might mean that an important document you are expecting, can be pushed back.
Forwarding email is just fraught with problems – which is why we now really discourage it.
Our preferred method of handling email, is to put it in a mailbox and have you collect it from us – forwarding elsewhere is just not guaranteed. Use IMAP – and your email can be easily collected on your PC, your Phone and your tablet!
