How to update WordPress – A Quick Tutorial
We host a number of WordPress websites – and one thing that you need to always be on top of – is WordPress Updates. So – here is the quick version of ‘how to update WordPress’:
There are 4-types of WordPress Updates:
- WordPress Core Files
- WordPress Plugins
- WordPress Themes
If you have updates available to you for the first 3 types of WordPress updates – WordPress Core Files, WordPress Plugins and WordPress Themes – then you have a potential for security issues – We highly recommend running these three types of updates as soon as possible.
With the 4th type of updates – there are generally no security implications – and updates to translations can be left until a later time.
So – how do you know if you have updates?
First – login to the backend of our WordPress installation – usually at your web-address – with /wp-admin/ on the end.
Once logged in – you may see a small number of updates immediately visible to you in your WordPress Dashboard.
Before running updates – BACKUP YOUR WORDPRESS!!
When you have updated your WordPress Installation – please check that all updates happened. Some premium plugins do NOT work automatically – or may require you to install a valid license key.
Please do NOT be tempted to download a version of the plugin from some website you might find – these are almost always full of malware! Premium plugins + themes should ONLY be downloaded from the author’s website!
Full backups, updates of plugins + themes etc, are all covered in our paid service – Manage WordPress Hosting.
